Is Nigeria Truly Experiencing A Recession? By Otolorin Olabode

Prices of goods have skyrocketed, companies are downsizing, We can’t afford to eat regularly, everyone is complaining. There is mass hunger in the land. This obviously is recession in the eyes of the poor.         On the other hand, let’s look at the analysis of recession by the rich. Owambe parties every Saturday, club outings on Friday, Regular online shopping orders, Lunch at upscale restaurants, frequent overseas trips, First class Air Tickets. finally, they acclaim “Recession is not affecting us”.

The two sides of a coin  they say don’t reflect the same outcome. Since, the Government made an official statement about recession in Nigeria, there has been agonizing tales of how Nigerians survive. From a woman stealing a pot of8 Amala to feed herself and her children to people killing Rats for meat. Many have had to subsidize their feeding regime by eating twice per day, while for others, it is a meal per day.

Even the Federal Government had to direct its ministers to fly Economy class when travelling by air. The rate of social vices have notched up higher with everyone seeking to use what they have to get what they want albeit through illegal means. The government has been emphasizing on the need to invest in Made-in-Nigeria goods and has made frantic moves to stop recession from scaling high by pumping money into the economy.

Nevertheless, there is a certain class of people in the society who despite the current recession continue to display their affluent wealth and we beg to ask “Is recession only affecting the poor?” Or is it not affecting the whole of Nigeria? In this case, the rich are not crying. Tales of how a popular senator bought a Rolls Royce worth 180million Naira still rings a bell in our head. Few days back, a Nigerian artiste bought a Mercedes worth 100million Naira.

However, it would have done the Nation enough good if we all can unite and help one another. one seem to wonder why in a 21st century country, there are beggars on the streets and highways. If Buhari and Osinbajo can take pay cuts in their salaries, what is stopping our greedy and self-centered senators from doing such. If Dangote and other rich people can donate to the poor, give scholarship awards to students and set up empowerment centers, what is stopping other so-called millionaires from treading the same path.

President Buhari, there is hunger in the land, the masses are suffering while the rich are enjoying, drinking the choicest wines from Spain, eating assorted meals, going on holiday trips and lavishing money on the latest expensive automobiles courtesy of the Nation’s treasury. President Buhari, the poor have the luxury of using rats as meat, eating an unbalanced diet,  getting sick everyday, the kids in the north are malnourished and one of your ministers is saying “Nigerians are not feeding well” . All is well with Nigeria

Living An Opportunity-Driven Life by Otolorin Olabode

Life to us (humans) seems so difficult whereas death looks so easy. The question is why don't we just commit suicide and just leave this world ? Why are we 'wasting' our time suffering all day, living our life on the food ration 0-0-1. However, something keeps us going every day, enduring all difficulties and fixing our eyes on that goal we're about to achieve.

Life sometimes might seem so frustrating, particularly for students always having lectures from 8-6 as there's hardly no time for any extracurricular activities. Nevertheless, looking at how we persevere despite the challenges we encounter daily, a specific set of people deserve commendation. These class of people don't give up easily, always ready to capitalise on any opportunity that comes their way. They are defiant in their ability to live, survive and eventually succeed in life. They are the ACHIEVERS. Nevertheless, we have another set of people who are similar to the achievers but they are not just them. They are ready to accept their fate and believe whatever is occurring to them has been outlined for them in the course of their destiny. They just want to live in order to survive. When an opportunity comes their way to make it in life ,they just let that chance pass believing a better opportunity would come again. They blame any misfortune happening to them on other people. Always depending on their friends for survival.

Seriously, where do we belong? Do we make use of the favorable circumstances that life present to us. Opportunity as defined by The Oxford Learner's dictionary refers to

'a time when a particular situation makes it possible to do or achieve something'. However, a wider number of the population don't believe that notion that 'opportunity comes but once'. Do we  make use of them even if they occur daily? Must we always blame our hardship and challenges on the leadership of the country? Before President Buhari came on board, didn't we live our lives in comfort? Come to think of it,why are others still living their lives comfortably, enjoying life, making waves, and harnessing their God-given talent for their own profit. Yet, we have people waking up and raining curses on the country's leadership. I remember when there was no light in the school hostel for a day, people would regularly 'register' their curses on Buhari. Why? Any way we might see it,don't let us play the blame game. Let us see opportunities as a chance for advancement and let's bring them out of life. If everyone in this world can see opportunities, chances, ideas and snuff them out of life ,then the country would be devoid of aged people washing public toilets, teenagers earning a living through armed robbery or militants bursting up every oil rig in the Niger Delta. Life is full of opportunities, our minds is enveloped with ideas. Let's strive to make the world a better place.

Has Social Media Tampered with our Brain's Configuration Settings? – By Otolorin Olabode

It seems social media has come to stay in Nigeria especially among our youths and adults. After the successful penetration of Facebook, subsequent entries of Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn have been greeted with lot of views and reviews.

However as it is with everything in Life, an advantage of a thing likewise has a disadvantage. Social Media has benefited various classes of People in Nigeria. From The Bloggers (Omojuwa, Linda Ikeji, OloriSuperGal) to the upcoming artistes, social media has been a huge benefit to a lot of people.

Nevertheless, it seems Social Media has altered our brain’s configuration settings. An average Nigerian wakes up and the first thing he does is to check Whatsapp messages. Thoughts like “Has He replied” “Has She accepted to go out on a date with me”, are always popular on the minds of the Nigerian Youth.

Another may decide to check on Instagram if his recent post has garnered likes or how many followers He has gained overnight.

Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook all rank high in the list of social Media Apps on an average Nigerian Youth smartphone. Especially on Twitter where all kinds of savages are recorded. An average Nigerian can spend 10hours tweeting, retweeting and replying on mostly trivial and unnecessary issues. Why have we not tried to convert those hours of Joblessness to ones of making money.

Especially our celebrities who most Nigerians troll and condemn on these social medias, these people are making money off those controversies. Remember the time when Linda Ikeji got embroiled in a fight with Wizkid? Truth is she had many visitors, views and comments on her blog due to that controversy.

It’s time for every Nigerian to make judicious use of social Media.

Stop wasting time and energy begging for likes to win a competition on Instagram when you could make far enough money through efficient use of social media.

Many have abused social media to the extent of taking photos in heir friends’ clothes just to post on Instagram or rather taking photos in their lingerie or posing half-naked.

Relationships have been formed on various social media sites but it’s on record that Social media has also destroyed some “once upon a time fruitful relationship”. The thing is news and information spreads much faster on social media.

Accusations of infidelity ranging from the husband seen in company with another woman to the wife captured in an hotel with another man, what about the nude photos and video of ladies released by their ex-boyfriend? Even our parents are on Instagram stalking and monitoring their children!

Definitely, Social media has tampered with our brain’s configuration settings!
